Join us on Thursday, April 7, at the Neighborhood House in St. Paul for Pollen’s upcoming event, Unraveled Network: Get Organized, where we will gather in conversation to learn from experienced and passionate community organizers about authentically building networks.

Civil rights movements, anti-war movements, feminist movements, gay rights, immigrant rights, police accountability—movements change everything. And at the core of every movement lives the theory and practice of deep, authentic neighborhood and community organizing.

What can we learn from these change makers about empowerment, equity, accessibility, and the empathy required to come together across difference to advance a greater, shared interest? How can we embed these community organizing practices into our daily life and push our own professional networking beyond the transactional to the transformational?

As the Justice 4 All (J4A) Program Manager at TakeAction Minnesota, Justin works to remove barriers to employment and democracy for families impacted by the justice system. J4A’s campaigns successfully moved Target Corporation to change their hiring practices and was instrumental in passing a statewide law removing criminal records questions from employment applications. Justin has led racial justice and leadership development training in the Unites States and in Central Europe. Justin served for six years on the Minneapolis Civilian Review Authority advocating for police accountability. He has a bachelor’s degree in social work, with over ten years experience working with youth and families in crisis. Justin is working to complete a master’s degree in advocacy and political leadership and aims to use his experience as an organizer to continue to build power for his community.

Bo immigrated to the United States as a refugee after the Vietnam War and her lived experiences have driven her to continuously develop community-centered, asset-based approaches that ensure communities are fully able to participate in, contribute to, and shape our democracy. Bo currently serves as the network director for the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) and is the chief operating officer for RedGreen River™. Bo also serves as a commissioner to the White House Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Bo’s extensive community building experiences include serving as executive director of Hmong National Development, senior project manager for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and executive director of the Women’s Association of Hmong and Lao. Bo co-founded Hmong Women Achieving Together, Sisterhood Laos, and the Building More Philanthropy with Purpose Giving Circles.

As Pollen’s director of communications and engagement, Julie builds connections with and between members of the Pollen community. She is primarily responsible for membership engagement, strategic partnerships and sponsorships, and amplifying Pollen’s content. When she’s not bragging about how awesome this region is, Julie can be found biking around the Chain of Lakes, writing creative nonfiction, and tending to her three cats and one Dutch rabbit. She’s also known to occasionally cook dinner for her husband.

Tenzin is currently the program and outreach strategist at Pollen and serves on the LOCUS Planning Committee, the Leaders of Today and Tomorrow Advisory Board, and the Ordway Notes from Asia: Vocabulary of Movement and Sound Advisory Committee. Tenzin graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in political science and has a number of experiences working with local and international nonprofits. Tenzin values cross-cultural and cross-sector collaborations and loves to learn about the intersectionalities of the world.

Ernest was introduced to the violin at the age of nine in his home country of Nigeria after a short stint with the clarinet. He has since studied with several notable string tutors and performers including Rachel Barton-Pine (U.S.A.), Randy Sabien (U.S.A.), Daria Adams (Violinist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota U.S.A) Sir Godfrey Amoah (Ghana) and Thomas Kanitz (Germany). He is currently doing graduate work in jazz violin performance at the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota where he is studying with Pete Whitman and Randy Sabien.
