Meet the Davis Law Office team: Davis Senseman, Emily Buchholz, and Chuck Leisinger. These Pollenites make up one of the 18 values-driven businesses that have come together in support of Pollen’s mission to invest in human connection. Together, they challenge Pollenites to raise $20,000 by Give to the Max Day on November 15, which they will match dollar for dollar.

All About Davis Law Office

“Too often, the legal system is made to feel overly complex, expensive, and inaccessible,” says Davis Senseman, founder of Davis Law Office. Since 2010, Davis Law Office has been providing agile, intelligent and culturally competent legal support for startup, small, and medium-sized businesses, along with their work with all kinds of families seeking estate planning and second parent adoption services.

Davis, Emily, and Chuck work together as a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. “We each bring strengths and experiences that help our clients, friends, and families,” says Davis. “But some kind of alchemical wizardry happens when the three of us are in a groove.

Through transparency in pricing and process, approachable environments and interactions, and efficient and effective processes, Davis Law Office works really hard to make quality legal representation possible for as many people as possible. “We work hard but we’re also committed to rejecting the toxic cultures of competitiveness and profits over people,” Davis says. “We love our clients, we love what we do, and we love bringing excellence into our work.”

Let’s hear from Davis

Pollen: What is your greatest source of pride in your work?
Davis: Providing a place for those who don’t have a place. The fact that this little firm provides a place where some very excellent legal professionals have found a home despite the fact that the profession as a whole can be a place that doesn’t welcome any of us.

When I started the firm, I knew there wasn’t any place where I could practice that would allow me to be my whole unique self, so I decided to make that place.

It has been such a source of pride to hear from both Emily and Chuck, and several other folks who have been a part of our team from time to time, that they too likely would have left the legal profession if they hadn’t found this weird little law firm.

Pollen: What’s the culture of your team, and how have you worked to build and reinforce that culture?
Davis: Like a lot of startups and small businesses, our team has undergone some changes this year—we’ve expanded, we’ve contracted, and we’ve re-oriented. We’ve tried new things—some were wildly successful and others, not so much. Through those changes, though, our team’s core culture has been unchanged because our culture is tied to our values: we work hard for our clients at fair prices, we give back to our communities personally and professionally, we center the marginalized, we care deeply for each other, and we have as much fun as possible while doing all of those things. We’re transparent with our clients and ourselves and we reject the toxic, destructive tendencies that we’ve all experienced in other law firms. We say no to partnerships & engagements that would jeopardize any of those values.

Pollen: When times are tough, how do you keep moving forward?
Davis: We’re all deeply committed to taking Vitamin D! In all seriousness, this is not an easy question to answer. At different times, we’ve all taken some pretty serious losses—some, even, that left us each wondering “what if I had done more?” Those moments are hard, and the tendency can be to isolate and accept the status quo.

Working around other businesses and organizations is one way we keep our heads up, along with carbing up, blasting some tunes with a beat, knocking some doors, snuggling some babies, loving on our and other people’s dogs, and above all else, staying connected so we can live to fight another day.

Pollen: What does the future hold for your work and your company?
Davis: That answer has changed a lot over time, so it’s safe to say we’ll see more change in the future. Our communities, the political and economic landscapes, and the world of startup & small business—those things are always changing so it makes sense that our path is similar. But we’ve also hit a point of deep & stable connection to each other, our strengths, our values, and the work we want to be doing as a firm and individually. It feels appropriate to let that gel for a bit. As we each build skills and expand our networks, we know that more opportunities for innovation and expansion will appear—and we’re ready.

Pollen: Why do you value being part of the Pollen community?
Davis: The Pollen community is dedicated to innovation, transparency, and creativity, and it artfully creates intentional space where individuals speak for themselves and their communities without tokenizing—those are values we admire and try to bring in to the world, too. Pollen always feels a bit like we’ve come home to the best version of ourselves.
