Generations of Americans have sought gender equality in workplace leadership. It’s 2015, and we still have a long way to go.

If the gut feeling that things aren’t right for women in the workplace isn’t enough, the numbers don’t lie:

So how can we kick off change today, so that workplaces in 2015 and beyond best support diverse points of view?

In this edition of Work Redux, Teresa Fox and Arwyn Birch (founders of Glam Doll Donuts) will lead the discussion about cultural assumptions in the typical workplace through their lens as female business owners.

Along with Teresa and Arwyn, a cast of incredible entrepreneurs will answer these questions and more. Join Pollen, Ashley Paguyo, Lori Barbero, Zahra Aljabri, and Irene Fernando in a rousing conversation on the future of work and business.

This will be the first Happy Hour edition of the Work Redux series at the historic and newly renovated Turf Club in Saint Paul, MN. Online ticket sales include a service fee. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets include small bites and beverages. Free parking is available behind the Turf Club.

One of the humans behind @DogsofInstagram, Ashley launched Lucy & Co. with her fiancé after the duo grew their pet project of a community-based Instagram account into a full-time job. Together, Ashley and Ahmed balance continued Instagram proliferation with learning the reality of nitty gritty new business ownership.

Zahra Aljabri is the Co-Founder of Mode-sty, the largest online retailer dedicated to fashionable and conservative women. In 2013, Mode-sty placed second in the MN Cup General Division and has been selected as one of the hottest fashion startups by Forbes (2012) and Business of Everything magazine (2013). In 2013, she was an invited speaker at Gel 2013, a conference that showcases “customer experience innovators” before they hit the mainstream. The Gel conference was the first speaking platform for Marissa Mayer (CEO Yahoo!), Salman Khan (CEO Khan Academy), and Jimmy Wales (founder of Wikipedia). You can view Zahra’s talk here. Prior to Mode-sty, Zahra co-founded and was COO of MuslimBuddy, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to building the capacity of community institutions serving Twin Cities Muslims. Her role at MuslimBuddy helped her win a four-year Bush Foundation Fellowship to continue her community activism. She is also a principal at Zahra Aljabri Estate Planning, the first law practice in the Twin Cities that specializes in Islamic Wills and Estate Planning. Through her various roles within these startups, Zahra has gained expertise in customer discovery, startup business models, and niche markets. Zahra obtained a J.D. from Syracuse University and B.S. from UCLA. She began her professional path in the media and entertainment industry where she worked for Hollywood directors and producers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott at RSA Productions/Scott Free Productions, as well as local TV station KTLA in Los Angeles. Lori Barbero is a native Minnesotan. She is living in South Minneapolis after a seven year stint in Austin, Texas. While in Austin, she started the vinyl-only record label Good Horse Records. She also worked as an Assistant Production Manager for SXSW and was a bartender at a honky tonk called the White Horse. In 1987, she began her drumming career and, along with guitarist Kat Bjelland, started the band Babes In Toyland, one of the first all-female bands to come out of the early ’90s grunge scene. The band reunited this year after a 14 year hiatus and will be touring the world in the next year. She is currently a bartender at Surly Brewery and is a vinyl-only DJ around town.

Irene Fernando believes deeply that new leadership is integral to organizational success. That’s why she and her two co-executive directors at Students Today Leaders Forever designed a model that requires each of them to transition out of leading the organization. Her willingness to plan herself out of a job is rooted in a mission to help cultivate a new generation of civic-minded leaders. She imagines a world where an organization’s leadership model is as important as its operating and financial models. Irene was recently awarded a Bush Fellowship, which she will use to further her education in the areas of leadership theory, management structures, and organizational design.
