UMN Morris Office of Advancement is seeking applications for the position of Associate Development Officer. This is a 100% time, 12 month, annually renewable position. Residence in Minnesota and participation in UMM’s hybrid work model is expected for this role unless prior approval for remote work has been granted by the supervisor and the UMM Office of Human Resources.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this position is responsible for generating philanthropic support for the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM). The Associate Development Officer will work as part of the UMM’s Development and Alumni Relations team to secure major philanthropic gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. This position also will build the pipeline of donors that give annual gifts with potential for major or planned gift relationships and opportunities.
Responsibilities
Development/Fundraising (85%)
Build and maintain a portfolio of 75-100 prospects with the capacity to give $25,000 or greater. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation and stewardship. Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000.
Conduct calls to qualify and assess new and lapsed donors, including individuals, corporations and foundations.
Work with the development and alumni team, prospect research team, faculty, and staff to identify appropriate prospects to engage.
Use research and analytics to inform fundraising strategy and expand the prospect pipeline.
File timely contact reports, maintain accurate records and provide updated information in the Donor Management System.
Organizational (15%)
Support UMM’s Cheif Development Officer in engaging the School’s Foundation and Alumni volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward and engage major gift donors.
Complete and file timely reports. Maintain accurate and relevant records within the University of Minnesota Foundation database.
Participate in special projects and other duties and assignments as might be required.
Oversee the preparation of fund reports and funding requests.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Two years demonstrated ability to successfully solicit annual gifts or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses.
Demonstrated success in working independently, but also collaboratively in a team setting, with emphasis on communications, interpersonal skills, and engaged listening.
Proven track record as a self-motivated and target driven professional with excellent time management skills.
Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly through strong phone, e-mail and written communications.
Demonstrated ability to be effective in a variety of formal presentation settings including one-on-one, small and large groups.
Ability to use creativity, reasoning, past experience, information and available resources to resolve issues in a timely manner.
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with client/donors and colleagues.
Demonstrated ability on client/donor focus and proven adaptability to different personality types.
Strong commitment to being donor-centered in our approach while sharing the University and unit’s messages.
Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an equitable and inclusive working and learning environment.
This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various University and external functions and occasional travel.
Preferred:
Two (2) years of experience calling, conducting face-to-face appointments with an emphasis on building a portfolio of donors or clients and closing major gifts or completing a sales cycle.
Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, confidential and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
Experience working in higher education.
