Building on a legacy of lifesaving work, HBFF is continually evolving to meet the changing needs of its clients, honoring its traditions while looking toward future possibilities and furthering excellence in the practice of addiction medicine. HISTORY The history of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is a tale of two organizations coming together around a shared purpose and mission. In 1949, the organization Hazelden was founded on lakeside acreage in Center City, Minnesota, and from the beginning was a compassionate, holistic and forward-thinking approach to the disease of alcoholism. In 1982, the Betty Ford Center was established in Rancho Mirage, California after Former First Lady Betty Ford openly shared her personal story of addiction.
From its earliest days, the Betty Ford Center treated women and men suffering from chemical dependency. In 2014, the two organizations merged to create the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Today, the organization is recognized as the world’s leading nonprofit organization singularly focused on providing healing and hope to individuals, families and communities affected by addiction to alcohol and other drugs. While it honors its storied and traditional past, HBFF is on the cutting edge of recovery, remaining first and foremost centered on the patient experience. Special attributes include:

Opioid Use Disorder Program
Developed by a team of clinicians at HBBF, COR 12® (Comprehensive Opioid Response with the Twelve Steps) is an evidence-based treatment program for patients diagnosed with opioid addiction. In addition to special-focus groups and educational sessions, medication-assisted treatment is an option for patients in the COR-12 program. The ultimate goal is to discontinue medication use and help patients live free from drug abuse.
High-Intensity Outpatient Program with Sober Living
High-Intensity Outpatient is also known as day treatment or partial hospitalization. This is the most intensive level of outpatient rehab available. Patients have the option of staying on campus in a sober-living residence. Outside of treatment programming hours, patients are able to leave campus to participate in recovery activities, work or school.

FAMILY PROGRAMS
Education and Support for Children and Families Affected by Substance Abuse Children and families are often left behind when a loved one enters alcohol or drug rehab, but the truth is they need help too. The Hazelden Betty Ford Children’s Program helps kids ages 7-12 learn to safely navigate the challenges and risks of growing up in a family with addiction. The Family Program serves to educate and provide additional counseling and support to anyone in the family that is affected by a loved one’s substance abuse. Through the Family Programs, support groups and family counseling, loved ones will learn how to work through the difficulties the client has experienced, understand how to set healthy boundaries, and begin to rebuild trusting relationships. Many of the family services are free and available to anyone. In addition, many are provided virtually so support can be accessed from anywhere. Special sessions are available for Spanish speaking participants.
RECOVERY MANAGEMENT

You are essentially learning to live your life differently in order to manage the symptoms of a chronic disease. Post-treatment services and resources are designed to support and inform clients’ efforts over the long term. Continual offerings include expert and accessible online, in-person and digital recovery support services, including mobile apps, Twelve Step retreats, web/phone-based recovery coaching and much more.
EDUCATION HAZELDEN BETTY FORD PUBLISHING DIVISION
In 1954, a book was written by a man who simply wanted to help other alcoholics. The book’s format was untried—a daily reading, meditation and prayer. Selling almost 5,000 copies in its first year, Twenty-Four Hours a Day launched the organization’s publishing division and introduced a now iconic self-help tool: the daily meditation book. Today, HBFF is the world’s leading publisher of addiction treatment and recovery resources. Its mobile apps and e-books, online bookstore, and on-demand curricula and videos for professionals put this world of information and inspiration at people’s fingertips 24/7.
HAZELDEN BETTY FORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ADDICTION STUDIES
The Graduate School sets the standard in quality and convenience by offering master’s degree programs that prepare people for a career as an addiction and mental health counselor, while fitting graduate education easily into their lives. Both of HBFF’s addiction counseling programs, while focused on the study and treatment of substance use disorders, include coursework in mental health and co-occurring disorders. This integrated approach reflects best practices in health care to treat substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions with a comprehensive counseling approach. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, and the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission, the Graduate School upholds the highest standards of academic excellence and professional competence.

Few addiction treatment providers have the internal resources and infrastructure required to not only keep up-to-date with current scientific literature, but also to conduct and disseminate research:
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Perhaps the most critical role of the Butler Center is to conduct ongoing scientific research that can be used to not only continuously improve HBFF’s clinical services and programs, but also to inform the field of addiction and recovery as a whole. This research is completed through numerous projects that are designed and implemented by Center staff and collaborators. Findings are reported in scientific journals and institutional reports throughout the year. In 2019, the Center and its collaborators published a significant scientific article: “Medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder within a 12-step based treatment center: Feasibility and initial results,” which described the Foundation’s COR-12TM program, a plan of treatment that has been adopted by opioid treatment centers throughout the nation.
The Center has also published several advanced statistical internal reports for Foundation program leaders, offering advanced insight into data trends and providing empirical recommendations for ongoing program improvement and effectiveness. The Center supports the Foundation and the greater recovery community through a number of projects, roles and services.
