UMN Morris Office of Advancement is seeking applications for the position of Development Officer or Senior Development Officer. This is a 100% time, 12 month, annually renewable position. Residence in Minnesota and participation in UMM’s hybrid work model is expected for this role unless prior approval for remote work has been granted by the supervisor and the UMM Office of Human Resources.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this position is responsible for generating philanthropic support for the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM). The Development Officer will work as part of the UMM’s Development and Alumni Relations team to secure major philanthropic gifts from various sources including individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses.
Responsibilities
Major Gifts Fundraising: 85%
Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors with a specific focus on major gift and lead gift prospects. Provide stewardship for assigned donors and secured gifts.
Manage a portfolio of major and lead gift donors and prospects. Serve as the primary contact manager for a portfolio of major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 and above. Responsible for all aspects of the donor continuum and takes timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Utilizes various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts.
Builds and maintains a portfolio of approximately 125 major gift prospects, to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation, closure, and stewardship. Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range from approximately $500,000 to $1 million, which may include lead gifts of $25-$50,000 or more. The candidate selected will work closely with prospect management and development leaders to set appropriate annual goals.
In coordination with Dir Adv./CDO, develop and execute annual strategic work plan designed to achieve both individual metric goals (major gifts closed, major gift solicitations, funds raised, personal face-to-face visits and prospect qualification) and campus priorities
Work closely with the advancement team, academic leadership, and University of Minnesota Foundation leadership to create an articulate and compelling case for support for UMM.
Present timely and strategic gift opportunities to donors for their support. Conduct follow up communications to develop and implement strategies that may involve UMM leadership, Athletics, fellow benefactors, staff, faculty, students and volunteers to participate in the cultivations and solicitations.
Collaborates with UMF professionals and utilizes UMF centralized resources to achieve and exceed established standards and metrics for the position
Perform development-related administrative duties including timely entry of contact reports, DMS updates, and budget management
Prepare reports and other required information as requested.
Provide visible leadership as a member of development staff by engaging in organization-wide activities such as development meetings, all-staff meetings, and staff events
Work closely and effectively with Alumni Relations and Annual Giving staff to expand prospect identification and enhance engagement
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Appointment will be made, and job duties assigned, at the Development Officer classification for candidates with the following qualifications:
Required
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of three years professional development experience, with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit major gifts; or related experience in marketing, sales, public relations or related field.
Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities
Demonstrated success in working independently but also collaboratively in a team setting
Solid relationship-building skills with a diverse constituency of donors, faculty, strategic partners, volunteers and UMF staff.
Experience in coordinating volunteers; demonstrated ability to motivate and lead people and to work collaboratively
Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective presentation skills.
Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and current technology.
This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various University and external functions, and regular travel.

Preferred
Development experience, including capital campaign experience, in higher education.
Demonstrated experience in identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts prospects and donors. Quantifiable summary of major gifts productivity.
Knowledge of or experience with planned giving programs.
Strong commitment to a small public liberal arts college in the context of a major, land-grant/research university.
Appointment will be made, and job duties assigned, at the Senior Development Officer classification for candidates with the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and five years demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advice or related fields with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses.
